adaptations   (adaptayshuhnz) noun    A part or behavior that makes a living thing better able to survive in its environment.

 

  competition   (kompuhtihshuhn) noun    The struggle between organisms for limited space and resources.

 

  consumer   (kuhnsoomur) noun    a living thing that eats other living things.

 

  decomposer        an organism that breaks down dead organisms and waste

 

  emigration   (EHmuhgrayshuhn) noun    movement of part of a population permanently out of an area

 

  energy pyramid        shows how much energy moves from one feeding level to another

 

  food chain        The path of the transfer of food energy from one living thing to another.

 

  food web        Consists of the many overlapping food chains in an ecosystem

 

  herbivore   (hurbihvawr) noun    An organism that feeds only on plants.

 

  immigration   (ihmuhgrayshuhn) noun    The movement of a species into an area

 

  limiting factor        an environmental factor that prevents a population from increasing

 

  natural selection        The idea that those organisms best adapted to their environment will be the ones most likely to survive

 

  niche   (nihch) noun    The important part an animal plays in its environment

 

  omnivore    noun    an organism that eats both plant and animal life

 

  predation        The act of hunting for another organism for food.

 

  predator   (prEHduhtur) noun    An organism that hunts and kills other organisms for food and maintaining their life processes.

 

  prey   (pray) noun,verb    An animal that is hunted or eaten by other animals.

 

  producer   (pruhdoosur) noun    organisms that make food and oxygen for others
